Play 1: Capture Your Vision

Do you have an idea for creating an emerging technology that is accessible? Your first step is to capture your “Vision Statement,” which will act as a guidepost throughout the stages of your effort. Your Vision Statement should be inspirational, reflect your commitment to accessibility, and reveal what you ultimately hope to accomplish.

The XR Access Initiative’s Vision Statement: “A future in which all Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Realities (XR) are born accessible for people with disabilities.”

TIPS

  • Define Success: Defining success before ironing out your vision will help direct your thinking when drafting your statement. It will also help guide you through the lifecycle of your effort and recognize when you have reached major milestones.
  • Paint a Picture: Communicate the promise of your initiative, painting a hopeful picture for a future where your emerging technology is accessible.
  • Keep it Short: Write down your Vision Statement in one sentence. Having a concise statement will help keep you focused on what you hope to achieve. Plus it’s easier to remember and articulate!
  • Make it Shared: If you’re collaborating with one or more individuals, everyone should have the opportunity to weigh in on the vision and should agree on the final version and definition of success. Having each person contribute their perspectives will help establish a shared commitment to achieving success.

  1. Why are you launching an effort to make your emerging technology accessible?
  2. What does the future hold for your emerging technology?
  3. Have you asked people with disabilities to be involved in or provide feedback on your idea to launch an initiative?
  4. Which challenge(s) are you hoping to overcome?
  5. Which path will you take to achieve success?
  6. How will you know when you’ve achieved success?
  7. What is the downside if your initiative doesn’t succeed?
